紂王是商朝第三十一任也是亡國的暴君，商朝共640年（西元1751-1111年前）。紂王長年窮兵黷武雖曾平定東夷，使中國版圖擴展至長江、淮河流域。但暴政加上重刑，最後導致眾叛親離及民怨四起。有蘇氏因繳不出貢糧而率先叛變，紂王親征攻打，有蘇氏的國君無奈獻女妲己求和。妲己美若仙女，紂王大悅即刻收兵，擁抱美女班師回朝。

紂王兇殘成性，視百姓如草芥。有一天紂王和妲己在瑤臺驅寒賞雪，好奇樵夫赤腳涉河不畏寒冷，就殘暴地命令士兵敲碎他們的雙足骨髓，以滿足紂王的好奇心。又有一天，紂王好奇孕婦的胎兒為何狀，又殘暴地命令士兵將孕婦剖腹驗胎而致母嬰雙亡等惡行。且又加重刑罰而虐殺眾多百姓，人民生活在水深火熱之中。

紂王殘暴至極，集罪惡之大成，所以「紂王」一詞等於「殘暴壞人」的代名詞。

周武王討伐紂王後，將宮殿中的后妃佳麗釋放，不繼續紂王殘暴、不合理的政策。而晉武帝司馬炎在稱帝後，雖然政治清明，天下太平，但卻在平定吳國孫皓後，一併接收了吳國五千名的佳麗，這樣的作為是犯了和孫皓同樣的錯誤。
